# Raising Missionary Support? How many Financial Supporters do you need?

[Warning: This post contains some math.  I apologize for this to those of you this may offend.]

Raising missionary support can be really exciting.  When you try to predict how many supporters you need, it can get discouraging.  Don’t get discouraged, but do make a wise strategy.

# How many Supporters do you need?

If you only have individual supporters, they typically give within the range of \$10 per month to \$125 per month.  Individuals give on average \$60 per month.  (Email me to let me know if you have a different average – but that is the number I’ve come up with the data available to me.)

For simplicity’s sake, let’s assume that you need to raise \$6000 of monthly support.  In this case, you would need 100 individual supporters.  (However, if you are a family, don’t be surprised if you have to raise \$10,000 or more per month.)

# How many are on your contact list?

If you have 1000 people on your contact list, you will need to 10% of them to support your financially on a monthly basis.  My guess is that you don’t have more than 500 people to contact.  So then you need 20% of them to support you.

What if you can find some churches to support you?

Again, my data is limited, but it looks like churches support a missionary at an average of \$250 per month.  (The range is from \$50 to \$600 per month.)

If you are only supported from  churches, you would then need 24 supporting churches.

# What if…

Most of you don’t want to be only supported from churches, but consider the possibility of adding just four more supporting churches in addition to your home church.

That would be a total of 5 supporting churches, which on average, would result in \$1250 of monthly support.  That’s over 20% of the support that you need.  Not bad from adding just four supporters (churches, in this case.)

Here’s why you should seek some financial support from churches.

On average, they give more, and so you need fewer of them.

They often lead to individuals within the church supporting you, even without you asking.  This also expands your personal contacts  for raising support from individuals.

It diversifies your support base.  Some missionaries feel a lot of stability from being financially supported by individuals because they have supporters from a variety of careers and regions, thus diversifying their support base.  Adding just a few more churches into the mix also increases diversity and stability.

Now, of course, we were talking about averages, and so your experience may be totally different, but adding just a few supporting churches can add a huge boost to your support levels.

However, support from churches does not come by accident!  If you’ve received training on raising support from individuals, you’ve probably spent at least a full week and several hundred dollars on the training.  Now add the tool that shows you how to raise support from churches so that you can boost your support level and diversify your support base.
